Like many adults living with ADHD, my childhood gave little indication of the challenges I would face as an adult. I retained information easily, understood concepts well, and my admission into the gifted program was a sure indication of success later in life.

I was messy, often distracted, especially sensitive to both praise and criticism - many of the signs were there, but academically I was strong enough that underlying issues often went unnoticed.

Junior high on the other hand brought homework, began exposing challenges I didn't experience in class. For the first time I really experienced task paralysis, staring at pages of homework, unable to progress, rarely holding focus long enough to finish a question with frequent breaks and distractions. The concepts weren't overly difficult, I'd never struggled to understand the work, but for the first time I really noticed my brain feeling like a muscle that refused to move.

I managed to get through high school and even university by operating in the 11th hour, when the fear of a deadline seemed to provide enough adrenaline to overpower the paralysis. Higher education and work life led to similar experiences over and over, praise for being insightful, creative, and intelligent, mixed with frequent issues falling behind, haphazardly completing tasks at the last minute, and missing basic instructions.

A friend and fellow sufferer once said to me "I feel like I could have been a billionaire or a best selling author, if I could ever actually execute on my ideas".

Like so many adults with symptoms of ADHD, I've led a good life and had a good career, but have often been plagued with feelings of falling far below my potential.
